One of several super cool, world class water park destinations, Schlitterbahn has become known for being an AMAZING water experience for families and this was our first trip to one of their parks. The Kansas City park has a the Storm Blaster-a Master Blaster™ uphill water coaster, four tubing slides and chutes, two tubing rivers including the world’s longest tidal wave river, 13 mini slides for kids, three relaxing beaches and a giant hot tub with a swim-up refreshment bar. The latest attraction is the all new Verruckt which is the tallest water slide in the world.
We recently visited Schlitterbahn Kansas City with my sisters family and had a great time for both the kids and the adults alike. With children from ages 5 to 14, we had lots to do for everyone for a full day's worth of fun.
Now my little man is a pirate fanatic, so our first stop when we arrived at the park was at the children’s play area and their fabulous pirate ship where he had to fight so imaginary raiders with my nephews.
We also had a blast on the other children’s play areas, including one of my little man’s favorite’s a giant frog in the Kinderhaven. This shallow play area is great for younger kids and for moms and dads that want to get some sun while kids play. It has a great giant train, a friendly frog, a shipwreck and a giant turtle with lots of mini water slides.
My little mermaid is little older so she hit some of the bigger water slides and play areas with dad. They had a blast on the lazy rivers and water slides but since our kids are younger, we spent the most time in the kids play area where we had the most fun.
Here's what to know when you go:
Coolers and picnic baskets are not only allowed, they are encouraged. Pack cold drinks and a lunch to take to the park to save on expenses, but since there is a bit of a walk to get into the park, and to the picnic tables, consider bringing coolers or bags with wheels to make transporting them easier. They will search your bag and cooler when you go in, so no glass containers allowed.
If you don't want to haul food and drink with you, there are stands where you can purchase them inside the park. Lines can get really long during the lunch hours, so to minimize the wait, visit these stands before or after the rush.
Tickets can be purchased in advance online and picked up at will call. There are some discount codes available occasionally online, so be sure to search for those before you make a purchase.
When you enter the park, go through the store to the right and you'll find changing rooms, restrooms and lockers.
Parking is free and convenient. The park does fill up fast early in the day, and if you go later you may have to park towards the back. If this is the case, consider dropping part of your group off by the entrance with your gear and then going back to park.
Get there early. There are tons of seating and picnic tables, but if you want a set area to serve as a "home base" during your family's day of fun, get there early to find a spot and reserve it by putting your gear there. The picnic tables, especially the ones with shade go really quickly! We arrived right at park opening and got the very last table available.
If you want to ride the new Verruckt ride, be sure to go straight there when you enter and make a reservation. They do book reservation times for this ride and they fill up quickly! We arrived at park opening and they were already booked for the day. You can wait in line to ride the slide for "walk up" rides, but the lines may be lengthy. My husband and nephew waited for 4 1/2 hours.
Schlitterbahn can be fun even if you don't have kids and there is a swim up bar where you can purchase adult beverage. If you're going with just grown ups and going to indulge, please keep in mind though this is a family venue. There was an unruly group there during our visit that was behaving in a manner inappropriate for children to see. Fortunately the staff at Schlitterbahn had them leave so that they were no longer disruptive.
The lazy river was lots of fun and our favorite part, but there are waves that can sometimes toss tubes. If you have young or inexperienced swimmers, be sure to put them in a life vest. There are lots of ones available to use for free around the park.
Our family had a great time at Schlitterbahn Kansas City and it was a fun location for a family outing. It was an amazing day that we’ll always remember and we hope to go back again some time in the future.
